Mark Newman
I have always loved making things. My creative process has many facets. Sometimes it begins with a vision, and sometimes it begins with the search for a solution to a clients need. The process ends with materials that have been carefully worked, shaped, and polished into something beautiful.
In 1996 I founded WoodCraft Inc. (DBA Mark Newman Design in Wood). My goal was to build a company that embodied my values and love of doing exceptional work. I have come back to my roots, designing and building custom furniture and mentoring the next generation.

Paul Hooven
“Tools, wood, and well designed pieces, these for me provide endless satisfaction, and aesthetic stimulation… oh yeah… and I love to hammer things.”
Todd Fifield
“What I love about being a woodworker is that a well built piece draws your hands… it wants to be touched. You can feel its beauty and purpose. You can see its story if you look close.
James Gudat
“What can I say; Trees are an amazing source of inspiration. Woodworking for me is one of the most satisfying jobs… to be able to transform these beautiful materials into functional objects.
Our Story
We are a design and build fine woodworking company based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1996, Mark Newman Design in Wood has worked in every neighborhood in Portland and our work has been shipped as far away as Atlanta.
Sustainability is important to us. Our definition of sustainability is something that lasts forever, and never needs to be replaced. We build the highest quality woodwork that lasts for generations.
Our studio, in SE Portland is where we design and build your project. When you walk in, the smell of freshly cut woods fills the air. The walls are covered with wood samples, drawings, and photographs. One wall is covered with mysterious jigs and patterns from countless projects over the years.
The work we do is based on craftsmanship. We have five-thousand square feet of machinery, tools, benches, and people making beautiful things. A tool is just a tool; it’s what you do with it that counts.
At Mark Newman Design in Wood, we are passionate about making things we are proud of.
